In 1999, Porsche launched its first water-cooled version of the 911: the 996. Porsche purists hated the car for three reasons. First, the move to a water-cooled engine. Second, the “scrambled egg” style headlights departed from the traditional round lights 911s were known for. Third, the 996 911 shared the doors and components from the cowl forward with the Boxster introduced two years earlier. Despite these criticisms, the 996 received rave reviews from the automotive press at the time that it was a better all-around 911 than the car it replaced.
