Land Rover Defender 90s are a rare site in the U.S. Even rarer to see are right-hand-drive Military Editions so as this one that once served on active duty in the Scottish Regiments for the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Fleet. A private seller now has it listed for sale here on Craigslist in Coopertown, New York for the asking price of $19,500.
The owner states his Defender is equipped with “a four cylinder diesel engine.” Our research indicates this is likely the normally aspirated 2.5 Liter diesel that produced 107 horsepower and 195 foot-pounds of torque when new. While a 2.5L turbo diesel was also available at the time, the British Army likely spec’d this unit with the 2.5-litre naturally aspirated mill as the turbocharged version could not be fitted with a 24 volt generator. As expected, the all-aluminum body shows zero rust and the army green paint hides any imperfections from view. In addition to the manual transmission connected to a two-speed transfer case and locking differentials, this Landy comes with interesting equipment still intact that includes a convoy flag, convoy light, military license plate, British driving plates, a hood mounted spare tire, and even a shovel and pick mounted on the rear swinging door.
The seller states his Defender has new Wolf seats that includes fold-away rear bench seats. Note that the original military gun racks (no, matching guns ARE NOT included!) are still in place between the front buckets!
The seller also states his Defender “is ready to be driven as is, ready for off-roading, hunting or just driving around town. It is very spacious and can carry a lot of supplies or big dogs in the back. If you purchased it to completely restore it to showroom quality you would not have very much work to do. So its perfect for a collector as well.” He also states that the only issue is a faulty turn signal stalk however he has a replacement part on order.
As far as we’re concerned, this is a go-anywhere alternative to the everyday Jeep Wrangler and is arguably the cheapest Defender 90 currently available in the U.S. Good luck with the sale!
