The original Jeep Gladiator. We came across this rare 1986 Jeep J20 3/4 Ton pickup here on Craigslist north of Troy, New York where the private seller of the past 25 years is asking $6,000. The NADA Classic, Collectible, Exotic, and Muscle Car Appraisal Guide lists the “Low”, “Average”, and “High” values for this J20 as $4,550, $9,400, and $14,100, respectively so like the private seller states, “he has a great deal for someone who likes working on Jeeps.”
Unfortunately, the seller provides just four exterior pictures, so you’ll need to contact him directly to see if he has more available, particularly of the interior and undercarriage. He reports that he performed rebuilds of the engine and transmission. The seller does not describe it, but we assume this truck came equipped with AMC’s 360 cubic inch V8. His truck also features new tires mounted on chrome rims and leaf springs. While he also reports he’s completed body refinishing, between the front bumper blemishes, waviness in the rear bed panels, and what appears in the pictures as possible corrosion in the panel seams just forward of the rear wheel wells we highly recommend an in-person inspection of this truck before you pull the trigger and buy it. Finally, the seller states his truck is in need of a new fuel pump, so you’ll need to confirm with him whether you’ll need to replace that before you set out for home driving this J20.
Chrysler purchased American Motors and its cash cow Jeep Division in 1987, so this J20 is one of the last AMC-sourced full-sized pickups before it was phased out after 1988. Good luck with the purchase!
