We found this Red over Tan cloth 1977 AMC Gremlin X for sale here on Craigslist in Fairfield, Connecticut where the private seller is asking $12,995. Based on the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool, the seller is looking to get about $3,000 above the #2 “Excellent” level of $10,100.
With a new wave of subcompacts from the “Big Three” on the horizon and no capital to design a new car that could compete, AMC called on designer Dick Teague to help. His answer was to literally chop the back off the AMC’s existing Hornet sedan and shortened the wheelbase by one foot to create the Gremlin hatchback. AMC launched the “new” car in 1970 and continued production through 1978.
The private seller states that his Gremlin only has 67K original miles as the car was in a “California older gentleman’s collection for many years.” He also reports that the interior is completely original and the red exterior paint is mostly original. In the seller’s words, “the car just went through a complete overhaul, new brakes , front-end , lines, tuneup and more receipts.
While we think the period correct Cragar SS rims look great on this car, we’re disappointed with the modern stereo installation that butchered the original door cards to make room for speakers. We also note that the seller provides a picture showing the original air conditioning components in a box. From our perspective, those two errors in judgement bring the car down to #3 “Good” condition so try to leverage those facts to have the seller lower the asking price a bit. Otherwise, this appears to be a nice Gremlin in very presentable condition that will be the talk of any Cars & Coffee you drive it to. Good luck with the purchase!
