Savvy Guys With Rides followers will likely realize we featured a ’69 Jeepster Commando just last Friday.  Normally, we’d shy away from doing that, however its rare when these Commandos show up for sale, so we’re taking advantage of the opportunity.

We came across this 1971 Jeepster Commando Two Door Deluxe Wagon here on Craigslist in St. James, New York (Long Island) where the private seller is currently asking $12,500 for it.  The NADA Classic, Collectible, Exotic, and Muscle Car Appraisal Guide currently lists the “Low”, “Average”, and “High” range of these examples as $4,800, $11,250, and $19,200, respectively so given the rust spots the owner honestly describes as well as the factory air conditioning not currently hooked up, we’d hope the seller is open to negotiation on price.

The seller states that his Commando is the rare Deluxe model that features a Buick-sourced 225 cubic inch V6 connected to a TurboHydramatic Automatic transmission that sends power to a Dana 20 Transfer case. He notes that the powertrain features a rebuilt transmission and carburetor as well as a new alternator and battery.

Other features included with the Deluxe model were sliding rear windows, a center console, roof rack, and chrome trim.  This example also has desirable power steering and power brakes and even air conditioning although it is currently not functioning.  Here is the seller’s actual description of the body:

“There are two spots with minimal rocker rust and some body blemishes to the pass side fender. interior has some tears to the seats but they are along seams and should be able to be repaired with what’s there. Floors/frame are great. small dent in the roof. AC and roof rack are currently off the truck, but will be included.”  The seller also notes that a soft top is also included with the sale.

While while we feel an in-person inspection will confirm any nuances the seller may have omitted, based on the pictures provided this appears to be a restorable driver example of the last year of the Kaiser-designed Commando on the more desirable short wheelbase.  We like examples like this where you can enjoy this all summer and then get to work on addressing the body issue over the winter.  Good luck with the purchase!
