August 1, 2019 Update – While updating our database we confirmed the seller of this Toyota deleted their Craigslist Ad, so we’re calling this one “Sold!”

We found this 59K mile, 1976 Toyota SR5 Sport Truck 2WD (RN23) in July 2019 listed on Craigslist in Windham, Connecticut where the seller currently has it listed for $7,500.  The NADA Classic, Collectible, Exotic, and Muscle Car Appraisal Guide lists the “Low”, “Average”, and “High” value range for this truck at $2,000, $4,700, and $6,975, respectively, so we hope the seller has a bit of wiggle room on this as his truck as it is far from perfect and despite his assertion “you will not find a better one” is a bold statement.

Toyota redesigned its popular Hilux pickup for 1975 to be larger and with increased standard equipment. In North America, the new version also meant the introduction of the considerably larger 20R 2.2 liter inline four-cylinder engine as well as the SR5 upscale trim package. Also in North America, the Hilux name was fully phased out and replaced simply by “Truck” that year.

The current owner states that his truck is “a real Oregon barn find and a survivor” with 59,000 miles as it was driven only the first three years of its life before sitting in a barn until 2010.  The seller reports that the original paint is not perfect and has patina.  While he reports there is some surface rust, he states there are no holes and all the sheet metal is original.  Our biggest concern is the bed seam along the driver’s side behind the rear wheel.  These are notorious rust out areas and what is currently described as “surface rust” will likely turn into a slightly bigger project.  An in-person inspection is definitely a must for this truck prior to writing a check.

The sale includes the original books, maintenance manual, and tool kit.

While we disagree with the seller’s statement “that you will not find a better one,” its no secret these mid-seventies Toyotas are becoming harder to find as these had trouble fighting rust even in drier climates.  While overall very solid and equipped with the reliable 20R engine, the rust that is surfacing on this truck needs to be addressed immediately and the interior needs finishing to get it ready for your local Cars & Coffee.  Good luck with the purchase!
