In August 2019, we first noticed this silver over black 1983 Volvo 245 GLT Wagon for sale on Craigslist in Woodstock, New York by a long time Volvo collector and Volvo Club of America member who is currently asking $10,450 for his wagon. The NADA Classic, Collectible, Exotic, and Muscle Car Appraisal Guide currently list their “Low”, “Average”, and “High” value range at only $1,500, $2,400, and $3,600, respectively for these cars. We note that Hagerty Insurance currently does not provide valuations on this Vintage of Volvo and this 1984 example here on Bring A Trailer sold in February 2018 for $8,600. Consequently, we’re giving this owner our latest “NEW!” (for No Effin Way!) Award for his optimistic pricing.
By the early 1980s while Volvos enjoyed a well-deserved reputation for safety, they weren’t exactly known for performance beyond the preferred rear wheel; drive platform. The 245 GLT Turbo presented here was Volvo’s attempt to lure buyers who needed a station wagon but wanted to at least feel like they were driving something sportier, particularly when equipped with a manual transmission. Turbo models benefitted from top-of-the-line leather interior trim.
The owner is proud to report that his 245 GLT has 139K miles and that it “runs, drives, and handles beautifully.” While all of the gauges including the clock work, the seller mentions that the rear wiper and rear windows are not working. We like that he “backdated” the front grill of his wagon to the cleaner looking single headlight design.
Based on the pictures provided, we agree with the private seller’s assessment that the dashboard is free of cracks and there are no tears in the leather seats. Though no picture is provided the owner states the headliner is in great condition.
The seller is quick to mention his 245 comes with a recent clutch and air conditioning compressor replacements along with a new set of tires. If you’re looking for a sporty version of Volvo’s venerable 245 wagon, this is a great example if you can get the seller to be a bit more realistic on the price unless he can provide better justification on why he should get that premium. Good luck with the purchase!
