If you’re looking for a surf wagon hot rod, this 1939 Ford steel body mated with a handcrafted rear wood body may fit the bill. Its located here on Craigslist in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where the owner has it, in his words, aggressively priced at $35,000 but is open to realistic offers as he needs to make room in his garage for another toy he just purchased. The NADA Classic, Collectible, Exotic, and Muscle Car Guide currently lists their “Low”, “Average”, and “High” value range for an authentic four-door wood wagon at $69,000, $165,400, and $297,400, respectively, so this example makes a nice woody alternative that is likely better built than the original.
We love the two door “Shooting Brake” style this example offers as it has a much cleaner look than the originals, in our opinion. We also love that the builder chose to stick with Ford components with a period correct Flathead V8 connected to a three-speed, floor shifted, transmission. The conversion to an alternator and a large custom aluminum radiator are nice upgrades that likely improve driveability. The period correct painted wire wheels with subtle chrome touches feature newer tires with several hundred miles traveled.
The seller also reports his custom woody “features lots of new upgraded brake and suspension parts to make it ride smoother and stop easier and that all chrome and trim is nearly perfect.” This is a cool woody by any standard that will get you compliments everywhere you take it. Good luck with the Purchase!
