Radwood Fans rejoice! Posted on Thursday is what appears to be a very well maintained black over tan 1990 Saab Turbo Convertible 5-Speed you can find here on Craigslist in Mill Neck, New York where the original owner is asking $6,950. The NADA Classic, Collectible, Exotic, and Muscle Car Directory’s “Low”, “Average”, and “High” retail value range for these cars are currently at $3,650, $6,250, and $8,300, respectively so the original owner appears to have priced his Saab realistically.
Saab produced its iconic “Classic” 900 from 1978 to 1994 with only minor styling changes through that entire run. In true Saab fashion, front-engine, front-wheel-drive 900 featured a number of innovative features that included a longitudinally mounted, 45-degree slanted, inline four-cylinder engine that actually sent power towards the front of the car and a double wishbone front suspension that provided excellent road feel and grip despite being front wheel drive. The unique curved windshield and center-console mounted ignition switch added to the “born from jets” allure of these cars.
In the mid-1980s, the president of Saab-Scania of America, Robert J. Sinclair, suggested a convertible 900 version to increase sales. Saab’s Trollhättan design department based its version on the 3-door hatchback while the Finnish plant used the sturdier 2-door version, which also looked better and was therefore selected for production. The initial production was not planned to be large however demand was so strong that between 1986 and 1994 Saab produced nearly 50K 900 convertibles.
We love how proudly the original owner describes his well-preserved 900:
“First owner, always garaged and expertly maintained, this car has its original paint, panels and interior. Leather, convertible top, back window and parade boot are almost perfect. No rust, leaks or rattles. No brackets, holes, funky wires or repairs. Original radio/equalizer, keys, books/manuals/promotion literature, window sticker and all receipts including new master cylinder, tires and recent 1st replacement clutch. Custom car cover. 109K miles on original engine. Anti-lock brakes and driver airbag. Runs strong, drives like new.”
We’re amazed by how well the original owner has kept the light tan interior looking like new. With only 109K miles in nearly 30 years, its clear this car was spoiled and used sparingly. We agree with the owner’s assertion that this 900 is “ready for next person/family to enjoy.” Good luck with the purchase!
