While searching for interesting rides to feature for this week’s “Four By Friday” posts, we came across this Japanese Domestic Market (“JDM”) 1987 Toyota Hilux 2.4L Diesel here on Craigslist in Exeter, New Hampshire where the private seller is hoping to get $21,000 before the New England winter and College tuition hits.  Using a U.S. Market Toyota SR5 value found on the Haggerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool as a proxy, the private seller currently has his 26K original mile example priced $3,200 higher than the current #1 “Concours” value for these trucks.  We suspect given the short term ownership by the current caretaker, he purchased his HiLux from a JDM importer and now is hoping the rarity of these in New Hampshire will provide him a profitable flip.  Only the buyer can decide whether the premium requested here for a low-mileage, JDM Hilux is worth such a premium.

The current caretaker honestly reports that he has not owned the truck long but reports that the only thing he’s had replaced is the timing belt and screw-mount windshield wipers.  He also states that everything on this low mileage survivor works and that the factory air conditioning blows cold air.  The only nuance he notes is that the Clarion radio has trouble receiving stations but believes its related to the frequency range of Japan versus the U.S.

We love the oversize, fender-mounted mirrors the Japanese insisted was a good idea at the time and the blue “For Private Use Only” hand painted Kanji lettering one the doors.

Regardless of country origin, Toyota Hilux pickups are tough and durable 4×4’s that will withstand literally anything you do with them.  These trucks are typically beaten to within an inch of death, so to find such a low-mileage workhorse in this condition is a real find that will likely outlast you.  Good luck with the purchase!
