We love GM’s S10/S15 compact pickup from the 80s and 90s, so it was an easy pick for us to feature this 1998 GMC Sonoma SLS Stepside Regular Cab we just spotted here on Craigslist in Hanover Township (Bethlehem), Pennsylvania where the private seller has it listed for $2,100 firm. The NADA Classic, Collectible, Exotic, and Muscle Car Appraisal Guide currently lists the “Low”, “Average”, and “High” value range for this truck at $1,775, $3,250, and $$4,925, respectively so the private seller appears to have his has Sonoma fairly priced.
GM launched the second generation of its Chevrolet S-10 and GMC Sonoma compact trucks for the 1994 model year and produced them through 2004. The new base engine for these trucks was a 2.2 liter inline four replacing Pontiac’s venerable 2.5 liter Iron Duke four cylinder. Underneath the new sheetmetal, much of the chassis components for the second generation were carryovers from the original models.
The private seller details he is the second owner of this 189K mile 1998 GMC Sonoma SLS Sport he purchased from his uncle, the original owner, 18 months ago. With the high mileage, the seller mentions his Sonoma has a replacement engine with approximately 75K miles installed two to three years ago. He also honestly reports that while everything on his truck works, the “Check Engine” is currently illuminated, so the next caretaker will need to figure out exactly what’s causing that. A scan tool brought to the in-person inspection is always a good idea, although based on the seller’s description whatever the issue is will not be a negotiation chip with him.
We love the simple clean look of the single cab, step side version of these trucks as its just something you don’t see new anymore. That combined with the compact size make this Sonoma a great candidate for either a first-time driver or a possible LS swap for the ultimate sleeper. Regardless of the direction you go with it, good luck with the purchase!
