Posted earlier this week is this 27K mile, 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4WD Four Door you can find here on Craigslist however note the vehicle is located in Putnam County, New York where the private seller is currently asking $15,900.  While the NADA Classic, Collectible, Exotic, and Muscle Car Appraisal Guide lists it “Low”, “Average”, and “High” value range for these XJs at only $3,100, $4,975, and $7,050, respectively, given the low mileage and like new condition of this example combined with the wild popularity of this model among “Jeep Peeps”, we would not be surprised to see someone pay what the seller is asking.

Jeep launched its completely new compact Cherokee in 1983 and continued to sell the popular model largely unchanged through 2001 in the United States.  Jeep originally marketed the boxy XJs as Sportwagons, eventually morphed into the popular term “Sport Utility Vehicle” we know today.  Over the years, the XJ’s nearly bullet-proof drivetrain (particularly the 4.0 L inline six) earned a reputation for being extremely reliable both on- and off-road and when repairs are needed, the parts are usually relatively inexpensive.  These simple-to-run, right-sized SUVs continue to hold their popularity, especially against larger modern and more computer-controlled examples.

While the asking price may seem steep, keep in mind you’re buying what appears to be a twenty-year old new SUV.  With most examples of these XJs having in excess of 150K miles, you’ll have a great time tooling around in your like-new Cherokee.  We just ask that you keep it stock as there are plenty of butchered ones out there to choose from.  Good luck with the purchase!
