Posted on Craigslist in Lowville, New York is this rare, 56K original mile 1990 Daihatsu Rocky the private seller is currently asking $4,800 for. The NADA Classic, Collectible, Exotic, and Muscle Car Appraisal Guide currently lists their “Low”, “Average”, and “High” retail value range for these 4x4s at $1,675, $2,350, and $3,875, respectively. Hopefully, the seller is expecting buyers to negotiate on price.
Never heard of Daihatsu? Don’t feel bad as it was the last Japanese car manufacturer to enter the U.S. (in 1988) and the first to leave just four years later. By 1998 Toyota took over the small independent company. Daihatsu offered only two vehicles in the U.S.: the very forgettable Charade minicar and the Rocky 4×4 featured here. Similar in size and shape to the Suzuki Samurai, Daihatsu tried to launch their mini 4×4 competitor just as Consumer Reports’ dubious roll-over report on the former hit the U.S. press. Consequently, the Rocky never had a chance and left quietly by 1992 after only selling a total of 7,505 units over its four-year run.
The seller reports their 56K mile Rocky features a new clutch and reupholstered front seats in addition to a new starter and battery. While they report their Rocky is “in very good shape” one picture shows tailgate rust that will need to be addressed soon. If you dare to be different and prefer looking for rare parts for a rare vehicle, this Rocky may just be the ticket for you. Good luck with the purchase!
