In 1973, Mercedes-Benz introduced a closed version of their SL roadster called the 450SLC. Corresponding with this launch Mercedes debuted a 4.5 Liter V-8 engine in the convertible lineup, which was necessary given the new SL’s somewhat portly 3,400-pound weight. Despite have a taller roofline and 14 inches more in overall length (to make room for the back seat), SLC coupes had a profile to the two door roadster with its hardtop installed. By 1979 when this example left the manufacturing plant, 450 SLCs gained portly bumpers designed to meet U.S. safety regulations while power dropped to 180 horsepower with the addition of a catalytic converter.
The second owner of this classic Grand Tourer lists a number of recently replaced items and states that all gauges, windows, and sunroof are in working order. While he also reports that his SLC comes equipped with a new set of tires, he makes no mention of the air conditioning system, so be sure to confirm whether that is working properly. If you love the look of a Mercedes SL but still need a back seat, these coupe versions make wonderful classics the whole family can enjoy cruising comfortably, if not exactly quickly, in. Good luck with the purchase!
