Posted on Friday by the caretaker of the past thirty years is this driver quality 1988 N50 Toyota Hilux DLX pickup you can find here on Craigslist in Wind Gap, Pennsylvania where the current asking price is $3,650. The NADA Classic, Collectible, Exotic, and Muscle Car Appraisal Guide currently lists their “Low”, “Average”, and “High” value range for these trucks at $1,500, $2,500, and $3,250, respectively so plan on using the horrific amateur attempt to “repair” this pickup bed’s cosmetic appearance as a bargaining chip. If you are serious about this otherwise great example of a 22RE-powered N70 HiLux, you can contact the seller via e-mail here as the seller is also open to hearing about possible trades.
While Toyota produced its virtually indestructible N50 HiLux pick from 1984 through 1988, For 1987, the truck went through a minor interior and exterior redesign that included a new grille, one-piece front bumper, an updated interior with full high door panels with faux leather stitching on the DLX models, and the outside door mirrors were also changed to have a more stream lined appearance. Most DLXs such as the example featured here came equipped with the virtually bullet-proof fuel injected 2.4 Liter “22RE” engine that produced 105 horsepower and 136 foot-pounds of torque. The example featured here includes a very rare column-shifted automatic transmission.
The owner for the past thirty years reports his HiLux “runs and drives great and the interior is super clean.” In addition to the column-shifted automatic, this HiLux features power steering and power brakes and more modern Sony CD player mounted at the bottom of the dashboard. Other than the poorly-executed “backyard repairs” to the pickup bed, the only other flaw we note is what appears to be a crack at the center of the dashboard pad. The 101K miles traveled is considered a good warmup for the 22RE engine, so whatever you decide to do with this basic truck, there’s a good chance you could be its second thirty year caretaker, as long as you fix the bed cosmetics soon. Otherwise, good luck with the purchase!
