Last R107: 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL – Sold!
Listed on Craigslist in Doylestown, Pennsylvania is this completely restored, Charcoal Gunmetal Grey exterior over Light Grey leather, 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL the private seller currently has listed for $36,500. Using the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool as a guide show this example is currently priced $3,400 lower than the #2 “Excellent” estimate of $39,100.
Mercedes-Benz produced the two-seat SL, or R107, from 1979 through 1989 in a number of variants based on engine displacement starting with the 280SL and culminating with the 560SL featured here. Produced from 1986 to 1989, the 560SL was exclusive to the U.S. and other key markets as the higher displacement tried to compensate for the emissions equipment required. In the U.S. the 560SL only came equipped with an automatic transmission as by that time American consumers looked upon the SL as a luxury roadster rather than the sportier two-seater of its older siblings.
This is the first SL560 we’ve featured on Guys With Rides and for good reason: most of the examples we look at often need too much for what the buyer is asking. In this example, you’re buying a fully refreshed SL560 from the final model year you can either elect to casually show or even Concours with, or you can choose to daily it as a 30-year-old new car. The classic shape and simple, relatively reliable switchgear run circles around the bland, jelly bean design of today’s car. Perhaps that’s why prices of the classic SLs are on the rise while Mercedes-Benz can’t find enough buyers for their latest version to the point rumors are flying about its imminent demise. Regardless of which path you choose to take with this SL, based on the pictures and description provided, neither you nor your passenger will be disappointed and the price requested is almost a bargain compared to the work completed on the car. Good luck with the purchase!
Here is the current caretaker’s description of their SL:
