Tobacco Time Capsule: 1975 Mercedes-Benz 240D 26K Mile Survivor – SOLD!

Nov 2019 | Classifinds, Malaise Monday

September 2020 Update – We’re busy updating our database accurately reflect the status of every car we’ve featured since starting  This Mercedes we first featured in November 2019 has since sold.

The Mercedes-Benz W123 mid-size sedans produced from 1975 through 1983 have proven themselves to be virtually indestructible vehicles, particularly the diesel-equipped models where it’s not surprising to come across examples with several hundred thousand miles.  So it’s a real treat to discover a 26K original mile survivor such as the one once listed on Craiglist in Downington, Pennsylvania where the private seller is currently asking $14,999 for, which relying on the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool as a guide shows the current caretaker has his 240D priced $1,800 higher than the #1 “Concours” estimate of $13,200.

Mercedes Benz produced its W123 range of cars from November 1975 to January 1986. The W123 models surpassed their W114 predecessor as the most successful Mercedes, selling 2.7 million units before the production ended.  The W123 became a hit with the public due to its modern look. Following the slow build-up during the first year of production to ensure the high and consistent quality, the customers who placed their orders faced a lengthy waiting period of nine to twelve months. A black market emerged for the customers who were willing to pay more for immediate delivery.  Like its predecessors, W123 gained the reputation of being over-engineered, well-built, durable, and reliable. Many taxi companies chose the W123 for this reason, and they were a common sight in Germany often reaching 300,000 miles.

Its nearly impossible to find a 240D W123 with such low mileage as the example presented here.  If the seller has the receipts to prove his local Mercedes Benz diesel specialist has kept the maintenance up on this car, you will be purchasing what appears to be a 36-year-old new Mercedes that will be ready to give you years of comfortable, reliable service.  Good luck with the purchase!

Here’s the seller’s description:

“Timecapsule condition 1975 Mercedes-Benz 240D diesel sedan. ONLY 26,000 original, verified miles since new. ALWAYS garage kept. Finished in non-metallic “Dark Red” color code ‘542’ with a “Tobacco” MB-tex vinyl interior. Berber loop style carpeting in phenomenal shape as well. Runs and drives exactly how you would expect a brand new 1975 Mercedes to perform. If you seek a true survivor then you have found your vehicle. Only the most minor blemishes. This is one for a true enthusiast or a museum. Clear title in hand.
