NEW! Award 23: 1989 Buick Electra Estate Wagon – $12,500
While scouring Craigslist we sometimes we come across a seller who thinks he has something much more valuable than it really is. That’s the case with 1989 Buick Electra Estate we found listed for sale last weekend here on Craigslist in New Rochelle, New York the private seller has his at best #4 “Fair” (Daily Driver) condition wagon priced at $12,500. The NADA Guides Online Classic Car Valuation Tool currently lists its “Low”, “Average”, and “High” retail value range for these wagons at only $1,512, $3,327, and $4,427, respectively so we have no idea where this seller is pulling his asking price from. For that, the seller receives our latest “NEW!” (short for “No Effin Way!”) Award as his optimism is at least $8,000 higher than the market will bear. There are far too many better examples of these Electras available for less money if you’re willing to wait a bit longer. However, if you want to try and bring this seller back down to reality, you can start the conversation by e-mailing him here.
As part of GM’s full-size downsizing program for 1977, Buick’s Electra Estate moved to the B-Body platform, where this square-off body style remained in production in various iterations through 1990. While Buick also offered a lower-trim LeSabre version during this time, the Electra Estate came with many extra cost options standard. After 1980, the standard engine became the 5.0 Oldsmobile 307 cubic inch V8.
While we have a place in our heart for this color and vintage of Estate Wagon and while the interior appears to present very well, there’s just too little here condition-wise to justify the too-high asking price. If you can talk the seller down or wait it out until he comes down to reality, you’ll have a nice example to start fixing up to its former glory. Good luck with the purchase!
Here’s the seller’s description:
Open to negotiation!
The Buick Electra Estate wagon is an absolute classic that ignites smiles from every onlooker.
It’s 30 years young and still a dream to drive. It has room for 8. A full 3 person bench in the front which is a hoot. The absolute unmistakable rear facing seats and wood panel siding are worth the price themselves. The wagon has passed NY state inspection in Oct 2019.
The shocks bounce like a new car. It has a brand new alternator (less than 200 miles). A brand new battery and tires with less than 800 miles on them. Power seats, power steering, power windows and radio are all rocking and excellent condition. After sitting in a garage for most of its life, the paint isn’t perfect but about as good as you can find on a car like this.
It’s 30 years old so there are a couple small issues. The A/C and heat still works but the motor whines so will eventually need replaced. The very rear window does not go up and down. The ceiling lining is starting to drop and needs to be glued back up.“
