While the salted roads of Western New York wreak havoc on any car driven through them in Winter, it’s not uncommon to find examples owned by fastidious caretakers who never drive their cars in winter.  Such is the case with this 1983 Mazda RX7 GSP when the original owner decided to sell their car in November 2019 on Craigslist in North Tonawanda, New York with an asking price of $4,800. Checking the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms the owner has his RX-7 smartly priced $1,100 more than the #4 “Fair” (Daily Driver) estimate of $3,700.

Mazda launched its stylish rotary-powered RX-7 sports car in 1978 as the affordable alternative to Datsun’s 280ZX, which by that point became more of a luxury grand tourer.  The RX-7 was a hugely popular hit both in its homeland and here in the U.S.  Heavily investing in Wankel Engine technology at the time, Mazda featured a two-rotor 1.2 liter 12A Rotary power plant offering very smooth 100 horsepower, albeit with a tendency to gulp, rather than sip, gasoline.  Series 2 (produced from 1981–1983) , or “FB” cars had integrated plastic-covered bumpers, wide black rubber body side moldings, wraparound taillights, and updated engine control components. While marginally longer overall, the new model was 135 pounds lighter in federalized trim.  The other big news was the new GSL package. Enthusiasts appreciated the package included new 14-inch alloy wheels and four-wheel disc brakes. Also part of this package were a sunroof, power windows, and other niceties that increased the curb weight to just above 2400 pounds.

We like this RX-7 as the original owner will be able to provide the entire story of his car from new as well as what he did to keep his example in like-new condition out of the harsh Western New York winters.  Good luck with the purchase!

Here’s the seller’s description:

“Original owner, very good condition, no accidents, still a hoot to drive after all these years. No rust– never driven in Winter. The same car dealer service tech did routine maintenance over the full time of ownership.
5 speed manual, pop up tinted moon roof, tinted rear hatch window, new alloy wheels, two new engine replacements installed through the course of ownership, AM/FM stereo, blind spot mirror, spare tire/jack, passed 2019 NYS inspection, won 3rd place @ 1999 MG classic car show, excellent CARFAX report (scored 4.8 out of 5), no a/c, minor oil drip from oil pan, serious inquiries only.
