Chicken Delete: 1979 Pontiac Trans Am 400/4 Speed WS-6 Survivor – Sold!
If you’re looking for an unmolested yet understated Trans Am that will make a solid candidate to have judged in the Antique Automobile Club of America’s (AACA) Preservation Original Features class, this example first listed in December 2019 on Craigslist in Merrick, New York (Long Island) is a great candidate. This 21K original mile, 400 4-speed WS6 equipped example the current caretaker has listed for $21,500. Using the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool as a guide shows the current caretaker has his Trans Am priced $3,400 less than the #3 “Good” estimate of $24,900.
By 1979, Pontiac’s Trans Am was the “it” car to have and Pontiac made it widely known it would be the last year you could buy one with an actual 6.6 Liter (400 cubic inch) Pontiac V8. Other than a redesigned front bumper/headlight assembly, Pontiac leveraged the Trans Am’s popularity with Black-, Gold-, and a Tenth Anniversary edition. By 1979, a 400 equipped Trans Am could not be had in California or with an automatic (both of those scenarios made do with Oldsmobile’s 403 cubic inch mill) and with all of the special editions being offered, making it hard to get the desirable engine in a regular T/A.
Consequently, we love this Trans Am as we would argue with the combination of the 400 cubic inch V8, four-speed, WS6 handling package it’s actually rare than all of the special editions to choose from that year. The lack of T-tops and no Screaming Chicken makes this example stand out as the performance car it was for the time. We predict this example will be more of a conversation piece at any show you drive it to for what it’s not rather than what it is. Good luck with the purchase!
