V8 E39: 2000 BMW E39 540i Touring Wagon – SOLD!
Update – we confirmed the seller of this “Classifind” deleted their listing, so we’re now able to call this one “SOLD!” While this one got away, please reach out either by email or call Rudy directly if you’d like to be informed when we come across something similar.
Many consider BMW’s E39 the last good looking 5-Series before Chris Bangle’s horrid “Flame Surfacing” arrived on the scene for 2003. We’re really fond of the V8-powered 540i such as the Black and Tan 2000 example originally listed in December 2019 on Craigslist in Toms River, New Jersey for the asking price of $6,500 or best offer. The NADA Guides Classic Car Online Appraisal Guide currently lists their “Low”, “Average”, and “High” value range for these cars at $1,825, $2,425, and $4,050, respectively. With this information in hand, hopefully, the private seller will be willing to meet somewhere between the high value and his current asking price.
BMW launched the fourth generation of its mid-size 5 Series, known internally as the E39, in 1995. The following year BMW added a station wagon (“estate” in Europe) and called it the “Touring” to give it a more sporting name. While E39s again offered V8 power, unlike the prior E34 and the E60 which followed this series did not offer all-wheel-drive. Oddly (most likely for underhood packaging reasons) E39 Estates retained recirculating ball steering while the rest of the line switched to a rack-and-pinion system. It’s also worth noting is the E39 series marked the first significant use of aluminum in the front suspension components.
Black and tan is a wonderful color combination on these 5-Series and we’re impressed with the excellent condition of the light tan leather-based on the pictures provided. The V8’s in these cars are wonderfully smooth and powerful. Based on the private seller’s description the new timing chain and engine reseal should give you enough confidence to put the money into having the driver’s side rear door repainted to bring it up to the level of the rest of the car. Good luck with the purchase!
