We’ve updated the links below. Good luck with the purchase!
Posted Wednesday here on Craigslist in Glenmoore, Pennsylvania is this driver quality 1973 Volkswagen Westfalia Camper Convertible equipped a rare automatic transmission the private seller is currently asking $25,000 or best offer for. Judging by Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool for this Campmobile, the private seller has his van price $4,000 lower than the #2 “Excellent” estimate of $24,000. If you are serious about purchasing this Volkswagen Camper Van, you can start the conversation by calling or texting the seller at (610) 906-9045.
From the early 1950s through 2003, Volkswagen contracted with fellow German company Westfalia-Werke to convert Type 2 and later Vanagons into weekend campers. While the early style conversions provided a raisable square section of the van’s roof to facilitate standing up when parked, the most famous version featured in the example here is the triangular pop-up camper that not only provided head room, but an additional small sleeping bunk.
We picked this “Westy” (the nickname applied to pop-top VW campers converted by Westfalia) as we always loved the idea of having one of these simple vans parked in the driveway for an impromptu camping weekend that’s an upgrade from our ground hugging tent. The pictures provided indicate this Westy is a solid driver quality example with a freshly rebuilt engine mated to a rare fully automatic transmission. So, while this clutch-less example will likely be even slower than its stick-shift bretheren, we think it will have a greater appeal among buyers who long for a VW Camper van but don’t know how to drive a manual-equipped vehicle. All of the other recent upgrades the private seller mentions make this example for a slow road trip. Good luck with the purchase!
Here is the seller’s description:
“Great condition 1973 vw westy camper. Bran new engine build with 1,000 miles on it. New carbs, crank, cam, valves, lifters, heads…ect. Close to $4,000 in engine work from engine builder “Valley VW”. All new speakers and head unit. New canvas pop top. New paint on roof. All new tires, suspension, brakes. A lot of work done recently to make it quite the vw bus. Runs very strong and I have made trips to the jersey shore with no problems at all. Has a rare automatic transmission with all new fluid and gear oil changed. Never drove a vehicle that gets more attention than this thing does. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me and I will send more pictures or info. Asking 25k or best offer.”
