Volvo Knockoff: 1979 Toyota Corolla Liftback Survivor – $7,000
As we mentioned earlier this month during a feature of an ’84 AE-86, while today’s Toyota Corolla is widely known today as a virtually indestructible front-wheel-drive economy car, in the 1970s the sub-brand offered a number of rear-wheel-drive variants like this 1979 Two-Door E50 Liftback just posted here on Craigslist in Spotswood, New Jersey where the second owner has his 61K original mile survivor offered for $7,000. With the NADA Classic Car Online Valuation Tool showing a high retail value of $1,825 we predict the seller will likely need to reduce his price quite a bit before this Liftback leaves his driveway. If you are serious about purchasing this Corolla you can start the conversation by texting Fred at (732) 593-9206 to set up an appointment to see his car in person and make an offer.
Toyota launched the third generation rear-wheel-drive Corolla E50 August 1974 and continued its production through July 1981. A combination of a worldwide recession and a second U.S. fuel crisis helped Toyota achieve its greatest growth during this period. During this period Toyota was still noted for trying to copy other car maker’s styling cues. So while the Celica of the period looked a Toyota Mustang, the Corolla Liftback’s styling was clearly influenced by Volvo’s P1800ES. Don’t believe us? Pull up pictures of both cars and you’ll have to agree the similarities in both the front and rear designs are eerily similar.
With only two owners and 61K original miles, this is a great survivor for a Toyota enthusiast to use as the basis for their next build. Good luck with the purchase!
