If you’re in the market for a no-excuses, 1950’s vintage full-size Pontiac convertible, you’ll be hard-pressed to do better than this 1958 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible currently offered here on Craigslist in Pequannock, New Jersey for the asking price of $119,250. While that’s a lot of money for any car, a review of the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms the current caretaker has his rare and well-optioned Bonneville priced $7,250 higher than the #3 “Good” estimate of $112,000. If you are serious about purchasing this very rare and highly optioned Pontiac, you can start the conversation by emailing the seller here.
After offering it as a loaded and Fuel-injected top-of-the-line trim level on the 1957 Star Chief convertible, for 1958 Pontiac made the Bonneville its own model range of either a two-door hardtop or convertible. Built on the same chassis as the Star Chief, Pontiac marketed the new Bonneville as its performance model, making many of the standard creature comforts of the luxurious Star Chief line optional. While this lowered the ’58 Bonneville’s price from the prior year, these remained the most expensive Pontiacs in its line-up.
An early pre-cursor of the 421-powered cars that would soon follow, Bonneville buyers received a lot of power for their money. While the base engine was a 370 cubic inch, 255 horsepower V-8 when connected to the standard three-speed manual transmission, power jumped to 285 horsepower with the optional Super Hydramatic automatic unit. For just $93.50 more, a Tri-Power setup consisting of three Carter two-barrel carburetors, 10.5:1 compression heads, and a performance camshaft upped the ante to an even 300 horsepower. Pontiac’s mechanical Rochester fuel injection unit was still available as an option, however its $500 price tag for only a ten horsepower bump sealed its fate as a two-year only option.
With an older frame-off restoration, comfortable seating for six, power to spare with its Tri-power set-up, Continental kit, and great triple blue color combination, this is a great cruiser that will make a nice addition to your aspiring Pontiac collection. Good luck with the purchase!
