While Lee Iacocca often gets cited for creating the mini-van, we have to wonder whether inspiration came from Fiat’s 600 Multipla such as the restored example listed on Craigslist in Weston, Connecticut where the private seller is asking $49,999, which a review of the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms the asking price is slightly higher than the average between the #1 “Concours” appraisal of $61,300 and the #2 “Excellent estimate of $41,800.

Fiat launched the 600-based Multipla multi-purpose van (“MPV”) for the 1956 model year.  Using the company’s 600’s drivetrain the front suspension from the larger 1100, Fiat’s tiny new creation could seat up to six people in a footprint only 20 inches longer than the original Mini Cooper. To facilitate this magic trick, Fiat moved the driver’s compartment forward over the front axle to create an on-box, mini-van-like design.  The rear end housed the powertrain:  a 663 cc inline-four cylinder engine from the 600 sedan that produced a whopping 21.2 horsepower.  Consequently, the Mutipla took 43 seconds to reach 50 miles per hour and only had a top speed of 57 miles per hour.  While also available in six-passenger and taxi configurations, the example featured here is the more common 4/5-seater version which provides two rows of seats: a fixed front bench seat for the driver and one passenger while the rear featured a fold-down rear bench for two or three passengers followed by cargo space between the rear seats and the rear engine’s firewall.  The rear seats folded flat with the floor.

If you dare to be different and aren’t in a hurry to get anywhere, this Mutipla will make a great addition to your garage.  We foresee this restored example ending up in someone’s collection as a trailer queen as this is not something you’ll enjoy driving safely on American roads.  Otherwise, this appears to be a no-excuses restored-to-new Multipla that won’t disappoint.  Good luck with the purchase!
