Feb 2020 | Classifinds, Malaise Monday

February 4th Update:  A quick check of the post reveled its already been deleted by the seller.  We hope the new caretaker gets this unique automobile back on the road.  Good luck with the purchase!

$311,000 in 1983 was the equivalent of $800,548 today.  Let that sink in for a moment.  That’s what the original owner paid for this 1983 Bentley Mulsanne Turbo Customized by Hooper & Company that you can now purchase in non-running condition for $3,900 here on Craigslist in Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey.  A quick check of the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool shows the seller has this rare Bentley priced well below the #4 “Fair” (Daily Driver) estimate of $9,800.  If you are serious about purchasing rare Bentley, you can start the conversation by contacting Brian at (973) 874-8300.

Well before Bentley and Rolls Royce were still one company, the two shared virtually identical models.  The only differentiation was Bentley leaned towards cars the owners themselves drove while the latter was for customers who preferred to be Chauffeur-driven.  Bentley offered the Mulsanne as a performance luxury car from 1980 through 1992.  Bentley used the name “Mulsanne” from the long straight of the 24 LeMans race course the company won between 1924 and 1930.  Taking it up another notch was the factory offered Mulsanne Turbo between 1982 and 1985. There was a 50% increase in power thanks to the addition of a turbocharger.  Taking it yet another notch was having coachbuilder making your already rare Mulsanne Turbo bespoke with custom body work that added what appears to be a period-correct complete body spoiler package.

At first, we thought possibly that Whitney Houston could have been the original owner as she lived in the area the car is for sale.  However, with her debut album not hitting it big until three years later, we quickly ruled that out.  Whomever commissioned this car, there is definitely a story under the under the hood.

Here’s the seller’s description:

“1983 Rolls Royce/Bentley Mulsanne Turbo by Hooper & Co., 52k miles, 6.75 liter, 328hp turbo. Super rare model. Sold for $311k in 1983. Good condition. Currently not running.
