Oh Canada: 1946 Mercury Ford Canadian Custom Convertible – Sold!
Modern Hot Rods often face two challenges. The first is whether the builder limits the transfer of their personal tastes such that their creation be sold in the future (the Chevillac we’ve featured on this site is a prime example). The second is paint colors and other elements in vogue at the time of the build now themselves look dated. That’s exactly what we have going on with this 1946 Mercury Custom Convertible currently listed on Craigslist in Verona, New Jersey where the caretaker of the past 25 years is now offering their Canadian built Hot Rod for $39,500.
Growing up in Buffalo, New York and spending a portion of each summer on the Canadian side of Lake Erie, I enjoyed car spotting unique Canadian offerings such as Chevrolet Beaumonts (Chevelle) and Pontiac Parisiennes (Bonnevilles), so we’re not surprised to learn by this post-Mercury’s Canadian division used Ford bodies for 1946. This was the first year of restarted car production following World War II, so without researching it makes a lot of sense Ford scrambled with whatever was readily available to fulfill pent-up demand.
By the pictures provided it appears this car was a quality build as it has survived 25 years and just over six thousand miles. While many custom Hot Rod features incorporated into the body of this Hot Rod remain timeless, the purple paint scheme and gold-bezeled Classic Instruments gauge cluster scream mid-nineties. We predict the seller will likely have to lower his price to attract a buyer, as they will likely want to invest in updating the paint scheme on this example. However, if you love the color combination as is, this appears to be a quality build that is now likely very well sorted that you can still cruise around within style. Good luck with the purchase!
