With decent sixties-vintage Ford Mustangs starting in the mid-’20s for even six-cylinder versions, we make the argument an early nineties Fox Body Mustang convertible such as this 1992 Mustang LX 5.0 5-speed convertible currently listed on Craigslist in Columbus, New Jersey makes a compelling argument for a better performing and more comfortable alternative for $7,500.   Checking the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms this private seller has his Mustang priced between the #2 “Excellent” appraisal of $12,200 and the #3 “Good” estimate of $6,600.  When it comes to “Fox Body” 5.0’s, we prefer the last two years (’91-’93) of the third generation Mustang’s long production run which lasted from model years 1979 through 1993.  These last two years feature the best handling and most power from Ford’s venerable V8.  Additionally, Ford figured out a way to make the top fold flatter on the convertibles for a much cleaner look. 1991 was also the year Ford switched to the beautiful five-spoke pattern wheels in either painted or polished form that Mustang enthusiasts still covet today. We also prefer the cleaner lines and 100-pound lower weight of the 5.0 LX models versus their GT brethren.  Long popular with the drag racing and hot rod crowds, unmolested original versions are becoming harder to find and prices are on the rise.  These early 90s examples remain a value that provides the performance and handling of a muscle car with the comfort, convenience, and reliability of a modern vehicle.

With the private seller reporting newer paint (is a great color we don’t recall being factory available back in the day) and a refreshed cloth tweed interior, there’s a lot to like about this LX ragtop.  We’re suckers for any car shod with American Racing wheels and this Mustang is no exception.  We can only imagine how good the Flow Master dual exhaust sounds when you open up the throttle with the top down.  Add a revised and lowered suspension and you have the making for a very fun summertime Mustang.  Good luck with the purchase!

Here’s the seller’s description:

“1992 mustang lx 5.0 5 spd convertible. Newer paint, new interior. 5 lug conversion, less than 1000 miles on new wheels and tires and new lowered 1” suspension. New tubular control arms front and rear. New heater core, flow master exhaust, call for more details.
