Zirconia Encrusted: 1978 Lincoln Continental Mark V Diamond Jubilee Edition – SOLD!

Mar 2020 | Classifinds, Malaise Monday

March 2nd Update:  based on the seller updating the ad for his 1978 Thunderbird Jubilee Edition he started over just one week earlier alongside this Mark V, it appears this car sold quickly while he continues searching for a buyer for the T-Bird.

1978 marked Ford’s 75th anniversary, so to celebrate the company offered two Diamond Jubilee Editions based on its personal luxury car offerings.  While Ford offered a Thunderbird version, the most luxurious edition was the Diamond Jubilee Lincoln Continental Mark V such as this 43K original mile example listed Sunday afternoon here on Craigslist in Watchung, New Jersey as part of a two-car listing where the current caretaker also offers this Diamond Jubilee Edition Thunderbird for a total asking price of $28,000. Based on the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool we’re estimating the seller wants $18,000 for his Mark V, which is $500 less than the #2 “Excellent” estimate of $18,500.  If you are seriously interested in this car or the Thunderbird, you can start the conversation by calling John at (908) 458-3861.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of Ford Motor Company in 1978, Ford released Diamond Jubilee Editions of the 1978 Ford Thunderbird and Continental Mark V. Adding $8,000 to the price of a Mark V, the Continental Mark V Diamond Jubilee was the most expensive vehicle ever sold by Ford Motor Company at the time, raising the price of the Mark V to over $21,000 (over twice the price of its Thunderbird counterpart). Only four options were available: the 460 V8 (with or without dual exhaust), a power moonroof, and a 40-channel CB radio.

In a style similar to the Designer Editions, the Diamond Jubilee Edition was given its own design. The exterior was given a nearly monochromatic exterior, with color-keyed body moldings, vinyl top, wheels, grille, hood ornament, and trunk lid (with Lincoln badge); two colors were available and exclusive to the edition, Jubilee Gold and the Diamond Blue the example featured here wears.  Chrome trim was largely limited to the window and grille surrounds, bumpers, and trim of the fender vents (exclusive to the edition). Alongside the Lincoln Versailles, the Diamond Jubilee Edition was one of the first Ford Motor Company vehicles to utilize clear coat paint.

The interior was given its own model-specific trim. Cloth bucket seats and a center console replaced the split bench seat.  The rest of the interior included padded leather on high-wear areas. Designed to provide extra storage, the console stored an umbrella on the underside of the armrest. Matching its name, the opera windows featured simulated diamond chips inside the glass, with a Diamond Jubilee script on the window the hood ornament featured crystal-style inserts. All Diamond Jubilee Marks were supplied with a leather bound owner’s manual and tool kit. Every new owner was given car keys matching the interior trim and could request a Ford-created cookbook entitled “Ford Diamond Jubilee Recipe Collection”.

In total, Lincoln produced a total of 5,159 Diamond Jubilee Edition Continental Mark Vs were produced.

If your tastes run towards a late-seventies land yacht and you want a Mark V, make sure your garage has the depth as these last of the big ones, at over 220 inches, is the longest post-war two-door car Ford ever produced.  Based on the pictures provided, the fact its being sold alongside a Diamond Jubilee Edition Thunderbird by what appears to be an avid collector with many cars, chances are good you’ll be buying a quality example you’ll have a very comfortable time driving to any car event of your choice.  Good luck with the purchase!
