Yellow Yacht: 1975 Pontiac Grand Ville Brougham Convertible – Sold!
GuysWithRides.com is pleased to exclusively present this restored 1975 Pontiac Grand Ville Convertible in which the private seller Tony is now offering his convertible for $19,900. Avid GuysWithRides followers may recall we originally featured this same Grand Ville we nick-named “Yellow Yacht” after coming across it exactly two months ago on Craigslist. Our effective search engine optimization (“SEO”) apparently helped Tony indirectly come across our feature of his car and now wants to list it in our “Reserved Parking” section.
Expecting new federal roll-over crash standards were imminent, 1975 would be the last year for Pontiac to offer a convertible until a resurgence nearly ten years later. When those standards never materialized, rag top versions of the Firebird and Sunbird thankfully brought back American drop-tops to market, however, they didn’t bring back the cache of a full-size, body-on-frame, land yacht such as the restored 1975 Pontiac Grand Ville Brougham convertible in Millersville, Maryland where Tony, the current caretaker of the past six years, is currently asking $19,900. A quick check of the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms the current caretaker has his yellow land yacht priced between the #1 “Concours” appraisal of $30,400 and the #2 “Excellent” estimate of $17,700.
Pontiac produced the full-size Grand Ville as its top-trim model from 1971 through 1975 as they moved the Bonneville downward in the line to replace the discontinued Executive. The Grand Ville was Pontiac’s version of GM’s last full-size B-Body convertibles (Buick Centurion, Chevrolet Caprice, and Oldsmobile Delta 88) launched for the 1971 model year featuring a new “scissor-style” folding top. Unlike traditional front top arms that fold on top of the middle section, this new design folded inward as it retracted. This eliminated the need for space behind the rear windows for the top arms to sit. The key benefit was rear seat should room was the same as the hardtop on these cars. Alas, the 1973 oil embargo conspired with what was thought to be upcoming Federal roll-over crash standards to see these Land Yachts disappear after the 1975 model year. Pontiac’s version of the convertible version was only available in the top-of-the-line Brougham trim, which in addition to all power options coming standard, the power came from Pontiac’s 455 cubic inch V8.
With just over 3,000 made, we come across a fair number of ’75 Grand Ville convertibles on a regular basis in all states of condition. Tony confirms during his six years of ownership he’s completely gone through his Grand Ville. For example, upon removing the cylinder heads on the original 455 cubic inch engine he confirmed the cylinders showed very minimal scoring that indicated the engine did not need a full rebuild. The TurboHydramatic 400 automatic transmission received a similar review confirming no need for a rebuild. While the condition of the powertrain points towards this Grand Ville having only 34K original miles, Tony does not have any past receipts or other documentation to help substantiate the mileage and thus is selling his convertible as “True mileage unknown.”
Tony’s Grand Ville features a one-year-old repaint in the original Sunstorm yellow paint that appears to be in excellent condition is a welcome change from the usual Buccaneer Red shade many of these convertibles came painted in. Tony reports the original convertible top works perfectly and the factory air conditioning system, rebuilt with 134a refrigerant, blows cold air. The original white “Morrokide,” GM-speak for Naugahyde vinyl, presents nicely. While the original radio is in place and functions, Tony elected to add an AM/FM/CD player mounted to the bottom of the center dash area.
