First listed in March 2020 on Craigslist is an exceedingly rare 1985 Saab 900 Turbo Sedan, a hot-rod four-door offered for just two, non-consecutive years and listed with an asking price of just $1,650.  Checking the NADA Guides Classic Car Online Valuation Tool confirms the seller has his turbo five-speed sedan below the “Low”, “Average”, and “High” retail value range of $2,150, $3,200, and $3,400, respectively.

Saab earned a reputation for building formidable driver’s cars years before this model was introduced, courtesy of the iconic 99 Turbo that we mentioned earlier. Despite its front-wheel-drive layout, the later turbocharged Saabs got better and better, with examples like this one fitted with a 16-valve engine, and the true wild-child of the family, the SPG – short for Special Performance Group – getting the whole kit of upgrades, including firmer suspension, factory aero kit, unique wheels, and upgraded leather seats. Of course, those cars are near impossible to find in good condition and command a hefty price when they do turn up. This sedan may look a bit tired, but in the smiles-per-dollar department, it’s hard to beat.

The good news is the seller has already incorporated many of the upgrades that make the SPG cars so special – all in the sleeper-ific wrapper of a stodgy 80s sedan. As noted in the listing, the seller has installed the European-issue H4 glass headlamps; firmer SPG sport springs; SPG “Aero” wheels; Bilstein shocks; a slick auxiliary gauge panel; and short shift kit. Rust is limited to the rear fender arches, and the seller also notes the need for a new brake booster and for the CV joints to be re-packed. Some issues, for sure, but nothing you can’t knock out in a weekend in your driveway. Even better, the interior appears to be in mint condition. This is the kind of car that gets you instant thumbs-up at your local Radwood show and anywhere else enthusiasts congregate. Let us know if you snag this Saab!

Here’s the seller’s description:

Old School SAAB 900 turbo in Rose Quartz. This car is unusual because a 4 door sedan is equipped with a turbocharger and 5 speed manual transmission. This configuration was only offered in 1985 and 1989. The burgundy interior is in very good condition and headliner is perfect.

Many sporty upgrades including Euro H4 headlamps, SPG wheels, Bilstein shocks, short shifter, sport springs, and extra gauge panel.

Some rust in usual places such as the wheel arches but nothing more than surface rust on the frame rails or as shown in the picture. Needs a new brake booster and cv joint repacking.

Mileage is just under 250K. Was daily driver for many years and is currently registered and insured. Starts right up. Come see it and drive home.
