Summer Project: 1990 Ford Mustang LX Convertible Roller – Sold!
As summer draws closer, the news will hopefully get better and we can all focus our attention on driving a classic droptop down to the beach or boardwalk, or even just a Friday night ice cream run. For Topless Thursday, we’re liking this 1990 Ford Mustang LX convertible on Craigslist in Bristol, Connecticut that is a former drag car waiting to return to civilian life and in need of a drivetrain. 5.0 V8s are cheap and widely available, and with an asking price of just $2,500, there’s plenty of room in the budget to build your dream Fox Body convertible. Checking the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool tells us that the seller has priced this claimed-solid Mustang under the “Fair” condition value of $3,800, but you’ll have to factor the time investment to swap in a new drivetrain into the final price.
As you can tell from the photos, the seller is clearly a Ford fan, with several projects scattered around his property and crammed into the garage in the background. As an LX convertible, this was the “sleeper” of the Fox Body lineup, as you could spec it with a 5.0 liter V8 but keep the plain-jane body and wheels. The GT would get you the more aggressive body kit and iconic Pony wheels, along with “GT” lettering plastered throughout. The seller doesn’t divulge whether this example left the factory with the optional V8 or the standard 2.3-liter four-cylinder, but the 5.0 badges on the fenders may suggest the former. Given how many Fox Body cars ended up just like this one – used as a drag racer or otherwise hot-rodded – it’s no surprise clean examples have begun to appreciate in value. Despite the need for an engine, transmission, and exhaust, this example does look quite solid throughout.
The seller notes several upgrades that reflect this car’s drag racing past, including frame connectors, a cowl induction-style hood, and positraction rear end. Fortunately, it didn’t go much further than that, as the car retains its stock leather interior in seemingly good condition, and it is said to have a newer matching white top as well. The listing claims the Mustang has been off the road for years, which is essentially a good thing since the time it’s been sitting didn’t cause any harm to the non-existent drivetrain! If anything, it kept the Mustang off of New England’s salt-covered winter roads and helped keep the body and undercarriage in excellent shape. While a 5.0 liter V8 is the cheap and easy solution, would you swap in a more exotic engine and transmission combo? Let us know below, and good luck with the build if you decide to make a play for this clean convertible.
