Love it or hate, the French Citroën DS was a front-wheel-drive engineering masterpiece built from 1955 through 1975 across three generations in four-door, station wagon, and even convertible versions. While its distinctive aerodynamic, futuristic body design earned it the nickname “space ship”, the innovative hydropneumatic suspension combined with disc brakes (the first mass-produced car to use them), helped the DS set new standards in ride quality, handling, and braking.
Despite its popularity in Europe, it didn’t sell well in North America. While promoted as a luxury car, it did not have the basic features that American buyers expected to find on such a vehicle, such as an automatic transmission, air conditioning, power windows, or a powerful engine. Designed specifically to address the French market, the dare-to-be-different DS was really out-of-touch with most American tastes.
Further harming the DS’ prospects on the other side of the Atlantic was an inadequate supply of parts for the vehicle. As a result of the insufficient supply of replacement parts, an inability to compete with bigger and more luxurious cars sold for the same price, and simply having not been designed for the North American market, sales for the DS were mediocre on the North American market, ultimately reaching a total of 38,000.
Here’s a Jay Leno’s Garage video of a ’71 DS21 is much better shape than this project:
With the advent of the internet, parts availability is not the concern it once was. If you dare to be different and have an appreciation for innovative engineering, this DS may be a good fit for your tastes. Good luck with the purchase!

Here’s the seller’s description:
“I am Selling my 1971 Citroen DS21 project.
Car lived its entire life in Connecticut. Was running when parked in 1995.
The original owner passed away and the car was purchased by me to restore.
I recently also purchased a 1969 Firebird convertible and decided to no longer restore the DS21.
As you can see from the pics the car is all there. I have a video (taken this week, 3/30/2020) showing it running on starting fluid. If you want to see specific areas of the car or want to hear the car running call or txt me.
Since the car was kept in a garage it only has surface rust, see pics. Car is pretty solid.
Car has paperwork from Connecticut to get it registered. if your state requires a title, I can register it and give you the title.“
