Look Like a Millionaire: 1998 Bentley Turbo R – Sold!
When it comes to looking like a millionaire, few cars do it better than a Bentley. No matter the era, a Bentley just seems to scream opulence and success, with a healthy dose of attitude thanks to the aggressive looks of the iconic Turbo R. Unlike its Rolls Royce sibling, Bentley kicked it up a notch by introducing a high-performance model that looked the part but also went like stink. Today, you can find them for reasonable money in non-basket case condition as this example here on Craigslist on Long Island, NY shows us. With only 55,000 original miles and claimed to have been serviced regularly by a Rolls Royce/Bentley specialist, this Turbo R seems like a potential bargain at just $18,500. Checking the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms this private seller has seemingly priced it quite fairly, with “Good Condition” clocking in at $19,200. If you are serious about buying this Turbo R sedan, you can start the conversation by calling the seller at (516) 418-9655 and when you do, please remember to mention you saw his listing featured here on GuysWithRides.com.
The Turbo R was conceived to give Bentley a high-performance sedan that actually offered buyers a compelling choice over a comparable super sedan from its German competitors. If you ticked the box for the Turbo R trim, you were treated to firmer suspension, wider wheels and tires, and obviously a turbocharged V8 that filled every inch of the massive engine bay. Later models like this one got an additional bump in performance courtesy of fuel injection, and all generations were built in limited quantities. Other tweaks included more aggressively bolstered sport seats, and the intimidating quad-look headlights up front. Sway bar rates were dramatically increased to reduce body roll, and the Turbo R earned high praise for its improved road-holding abilities in addition to its straight-line speed.
We came across this official Bentley video from 1996 detailing both the Turbo R and Brooklands models. The number of adjectives and superlatives used to describe the car are worth the view alone!
Based on the seller’s listing, this Turbo R long wheelbase example has been well-maintained since new at the hands of specialists shops catering to British car owners. The seller claims it runs excellent, and based on photos, the cosmetics appear to be quite strong as well. The background shots indicate the seller may own a detailing business, which would certainly make sense given the glossy paint and spotless interior. Although the wheel design ranged over the years from conservative to sporting, this generation of the Turbo R slots in between with a set of chromed wheels in a fairly demure design. The interior looks just as good as the outside, with no obvious flaws in the pictures, and attractive blue piping on the seats and matching navy carpets. Though these can be very hungry maintenance-wise, if the records back up the seller’s claims about lots of proactive TLC, this Turbo R could be a supercar on the cheap. Good luck with the purchase if you put this iconic executive’s car in your garage!
