Forward Look: 1962 Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country 6P Project – $11,000
In 1962 Chrysler’s top of the line station wagon was the New Yorker Town & Country hardtop such as the example posted earlier this week here on Craigslist in Byron, Michigan with the asking price of $11,000. Claimed to be one of only 728 produced, unfortunately based on the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool optimistically falls between the #2 “Excellent” appraisal of $12,400 and the #3 “Good” estimate of $7,600. Oddly, the NADA Guides Online Classic Car Valuation Tool lists their “Low”, “Average”, and “High” retail value range much higher than Hagerty’s at $15,200, $31,000, and $60,100, respectively, so that may be what’s driving the seller’s current pricing decision. Chrysler’s Imperial brand didn’t offer a station wagon in the early 1960’s, so their top of the line people hauler from 1960 through 1962 was the Forward Look six pillar hardtop version using a 126 inch wheelbase. While these were the roomiest factory-bodied, automobile-based station wagons on the market at the time, the clean six roof pillar hardtop styling take-rate was quite low. Consequently, this generation of Chrysler wagons became last true hardtop station wagon offered by a U.S. manufacturer. 1962 was also the last hurrah for Virgil Exner’s distinctive and polarizing “Forward Look” of these cars and low sales likely resulted from consumers moving to more modern alternatives. This 1962 Chrysler New Yorker is one of 1,521 Town & Country station wagons manufactured for the model year, 728 were six-passenger cars like this example while the other 793 were built as a nine-passenger, three-row, configuration.
Without mentioning it, it appears the seller has lost interest in their project station wagon after nine years. The private seller is quick to point out that despite a nice disc brake conversion combined with a safer dual circuit master cylinder, the pedal goes to the floor. That combined with what he describes will likely need a gas tank replacement and you’ll definitely need to plan to hire a flat bed to get this car back to your garage. Not mentioned is the condition of the pushbutton automatic transmission, so you’ll need to confirm its operation. While the exterior body appears to be straight and rust-free, we’re hopeful the floor rust shown in the lone interior picture is only of the surface variety. If you decide to repaint this wagon, we hope you elect to spray it in the original hue of Rosewood. With a rebuilt engine and some relatively straight forward mechanical work you can make this cruiser road worthy again as social distancing restrictions ease. Good luck with the purchase!

“One of 728 1962 6-passenger wagons produced. This pillarless hardtop wagon was Chrysler’s top of the line model. Original Rosewood, now black. Less than 500 miles on following items: completely rebuilt stock 413 engine, new 15-inch Kuhmo tires, new heater core, new front disc brakes complete including new calipers, spindles from 78 New Yorker, new master cylinder, new rear brakes, rear end from 70s C-Body, new front seat belts. Last driven summer of 2011, ran well. Stored in garage last 9 years. Engine turned over annually. Pushed out of garage on 4/8/20, brake pedal goes to floor, suspect gas tank needs replacement. Purchaser must trailer home. $11,000.
