If there was ever a project car we would run out and buy before selling our current ’84 Eldorado, it would have to be this LT1, six-speed manual equipped 1994 Pontiac Firebird Formula with T-Tops listed on Craigslist in Edison, New Jersey with an asking price of $4,000.   Checking the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms this private seller has his Formula priced to move at $600 less than the #4 “Fair” (Daily Driver) estimate of $4,600.   We do note however that upon googling this phone number, the current caretaker does appear to sell cars on his own frequenly, so in addition to scheduling a pre-purchase inspection, this is one of the rare occasions we recommend running a CarFax to determine the history of this car.

The fourth generation of the Pontiac Firebird produced from 1993 through 2002 ended up being the division’s final version of the F-body. While these remain the least desirable generation of Firebird and are generally hanging at the bottom of their depreciation curve currently, the fourth generation cars are arguably among the best performance bargains you can find today.  Why?  From 1993 to 1997, the sole engine for the Formula and Trans Am was the 5.7 Liter LT1 V8, essentially identical to the LT1 in the C4 Corvette except for more flow-restrictive intake and exhaust systems, which is easily remedied.  While a four-speed automatic was the more popular choice, a six-speed manual such as the one featured in this example, is the preferred version.  Unlike prior generation Formulas, this final iteration relied on very subtle, easily removable graphics to denote it was a not a base Firebird.

Why do we like this Firebird Formula so much?  As Hagerty Insurance states in their summary of these cars, “In many ways, though, the fourth-generation Firebird is like a Corvette that costs less and has four seats. It also arguably looks a lot more exciting than the equivalent Camaro.” We could not agree more.  If the recommended CarFax and pre-purchase inspection check out on this Formula, you’ll have a great performance bargain that is now both RADwood and AACA-eligible.  Good luck with the purchase!
