Lightning can strike twice when it comes to Japanese coupes with four-wheel steering, as this clean 1991 Nissan 240SX equipped with the novel “Super HICAS” 4WS system goes to show us. This 240SX is not only an anomaly for its unusual steering setup but also because so few are left in stock condition like this one is – these have been popular with the drift crowd for some time, which has done its best to trash every last one. We found this example on Craigslist in Dover, Delaware with 126,000 miles and an asking price of $8,900, with one caveat: this is an automatic transmission example, a major downer for anyone seeking Nissan’s classic hot hatch in its purest form.  While the latest hard copy of the NADA Guides Classic, Collectible, Exotic, and Muscle Car Appraisal Guide currently lists the “Low”, “Average”, and “High” retail values at only $1,500, $2,550, and $3,500, a quick check of Bring A Trailer’s 240SX Auction Results page confirms these cars are changing hands much closer to what the private seller requests here. When the S13 chassis debuted stateside, it sparked an almost immediate following from enthusiasts. Sharp handling and relatively low weight made it a favorite of autocrossers and commuters alike and combined with its clean lines, Nissan didn’t have to over-hype the car to move them off the lot. Gripes were fairly minor, but the heavy engine with its origins in one of Nissan’s pickup trucks was hardly a decent match for such a sporting chassis, and reviewers regularly took issue with it. Nissan tried to improve the drivetrain’s performance chops with the introduction of a DOHC KA24DE engine, which produced a respectable 155 horsepower. A sports package featured a limited-slip differential, ABS, and the Super HICAS 4WS system, and it’s likely this example had that box checked when it left the lot.

The appeal of an S13 240SX is rarely about how it is equipped – aside from the aforementioned manual versus automatic transmission debate – as the options were fairly limited. True, the Super HICAS steering system is rare, but many enthusiasts prefer to delete it entirely, especially if they plan to go drifting. Between the complexity and perceived lack of improved handling, it didn’t have a huge take rate. What’s most desirable about this particular car is the clean condition, lack of modifications, and apparently careful use since new given the lack of cosmetic flaws. The addition of the sports package is a nice bonus, but a 240SX this clean would likely have been just as desirable without it. Good luck with the purchase if this clean, four-wheel-steering-equipped coupe needs to be at your next RADwood gathering.
