One of the most iconic shapes in all of the automotive industry is a two-door Bentley, and this 1994 Bentley Continental R Coupe on Craigslist in East Hartford, Connecticut with 36,000 miles and a mint interior seems like a fair deal with an asking price of $39,900.   Checking the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms this private seller has priced this gorgeous Continental fairly, as a model in “Concours” condition lists for $43,000, while an example in “Excellent” condition will set you back $34,900. Obviously, a big factor is how robust the car’s maintenance file.

The Bentley Continental has always symbolized wealth and power, but the launch of a redesigned model in 1989 catapulted the design into a modern format. Alloy wheels, body-color bumpers, and a re-worked four-speed automatic transmission helped the car shed its stodgy, soft image. That being said, the cost of entry reserved the Continental for an exceedingly wealthy audience, and buying one second- or third-hand means purchasing an extremely complex vehicle that requires a six-figure maintenance budget despite the five-figure price tag (slight exaggeration). The R models provided plenty of thrust via a turbocharged 6.75 liter V8, and 60 miles per hour flashed by in under six seconds, continuing on to a top speed north of 150 miles per hour.

Despite our love for a Radwood-welcome luxury high-liner like this Bentley, the cost to buy such a vehicle is only one part of the equation. These are glorious open-road cruisers with a performance that is still quite impressive by 2020 standards for a vehicle of this size and weight, but maintaining such a car requires an eyes-wide-open approach. While the listing is short on details, sellers would be wise to spring for a pre-purchase inspection of a car like this (or any hobby/project vehicle where the maintenance history is a mystery), or at least ask the seller for copies of the history file. Fortunately, the cosmetics look quite good, as the acres of wood trim shows no signs of fading, and the leather seating and piping look quite tidy as well. Good luck with the purchase if you decide to put this epic 90s benchmark in your garage!

Here’s the seller’s description:
