Easy Restoration: 1960 MG MGA 1600 MK1 Project – SOLD!

If we had to choose among all of the cars Morris Garages (more affectionately known as simply as “MG”) we would like to have in our garage, an MGA Mk I 1600 such as this red over black 1960 example currently listed here on Craigslist in Troy, New York as the styling of these cars blends the best of the pre- and post-World War II designs.  The current caretaker states this MGA is recently out of storage since 1997 when it received a partial restoration and they are now asking $11,900 for the car.   A check of the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms this seller has their Mk I priced between the #3 “Good” appraisal of $16,800 and the #4 “Fair” (Daily Driver) estimate of $8,900.  Since you will need to transport this MGA project in some fashion back to your garage, we would work hard to get this car closer to the lower value.  If you have the negotiation skills and are serious about buying this MGA project, you can start the conversation by calling the seller at (518) 852-2858 and when you do please remember to mention you saw their listing featured here on GuysWithRides.com.

We always look at listing’s pictures for each car to determine whether there is a hidden subplot regarding the vehicle’s sale.  In this listing, its clearly parked at some sort of repair facility and sure enough, when we googled the phone number provided, it’s a restoration shop in the Albany area.  So, it begs the question:  why would a restoration shop not finish the car before spring to maximize their profits further?  Did the shop take ownership when the owner could not pay the repair bill?  Was this car used as payment towards another project currently in play at the facility?  Are they selling the car on behalf of the widow who perhaps just wants the car gone?

Regardless of what the story turns out to be (and if you find out, please share below in the comments section), this MGA is honestly described below and based on that appears to be a relatively straight forward project you can still have ready in time to start enjoying now that social distancing restrictions are the verge of easing.  The only thing we’re not big fans of on this car is the fact the engine is “a 1500 variant” which means its likely not the original 1600cc mill.  Then again, this car is meant to be enjoyed and as long as the engine looks the par, no harm no foul.  Good luck with the purchase!

“In storage since 1997 when the partial restoration was completed.

The paint & body work is very presentable. Chrome is mostly new and shines beautifully. The body has had some panel replacement but the work was done well and panel gaps are acceptable.

Chassis is in excellent shape with no signs of repairs. The undercarriage shows a new fuel tank, new stainless exhaust, brake & fuel lines are in good condition etc.

The engine is a 1500 variant which appears to be unrestored but ran when we tested it with some oil, fresh fuel & a battery. Brake & clutch hydraulics were freshly rebuilt in 1996 by a hydraulic shop but the rubber seals have failed and we recommend a rebuild of the braking system again. Original 1600 type steel wheels have old bias ply tires fitted which will need replacement. The right rear wheel is bent but we will include a replacement wheel with the car.

Convertible top is usable but shows age. A pile of new parts is included with the vehicle: headlight trim rings, all new dash knobs, carburetor rebuild kits & air filters, body gaskets and a pair of new unused side curtain assemblies. The original speedometer is included but is currently disassembled..“
