While some Supras have found their way into loving homes, the high rate of attrition is especially evident with cars like this 1985 Toyota Celica GT liftback, listed here on Craigslist in Madison, Connecticut with just 34,000 miles from new and appearing to be in rust-free condition despite living in the Northeast. The seller is asking $6,850 for this example, which is equipped with an automatic transmission. This is a third-generation Celica, known internally by Toyota as an A60 model. It represented a big shift design-wise from the prior model years, incorporating flip-up headlights and notchback coupe bodies, as was the rage by the time the 80s rolled around. The liftback continued to be a popular look for Celicas and Supras, carrying on a tradition of Toyota’s sportier models having the wide-opening third door. The Celicas, despite their racy looks, utilized fairly sedate-but-durable engines in the form of the 22R four-cylinder, a large engine by inline-four standards, but far from exotic. The good news? Parts availability is still quite good considering how many vehicles across Toyota’s lineup made use of this powerplant.
In terms of the subject car, it’s hard to fault. The listing notes it comes from one-family ownership, and the condition is outstanding in pictures. The cloth interior shows virtually no wear and tear, and I’m more than a little surprised to see a digital gauge cluster read-out; I had no idea Celicas of this vintage had that feature (it just makes it even more rad, in my book.) The seller notes it is “completely mint” inside and out, and I don’t see much that would make me doubt that claim. The automatic transmission may be a buzzkill, but it’s also likely a big reason why the Celica has remained in such fine condition since new.
