Great Survivor: 1961 Morgan Plus 4 2+2 – SOLD!

May 2020 | Classifinds, Sports Car Saturday

July 1st Update – while updating our Sports Car Saturday database, we confirmed the seller of this rare Morgan deleted their Craigslist ad, so we’re calling this 2+2 “Sold!

Morgans are an elusive brand of motor car which sports car purists aspire to own at least once in their life to enjoy the quirks of old world, wood-framed bodies.  With their inability (that is to say more like the Morgan Family’s unwillingness) for many years to certify their cars for U.S. export, these remain a very rare site on this side of the pond.  Consequently, we jumped at the chance to feature this 1961 Morgan Plus 4  recently listed on Craigslist in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania as our first example of the Marque ever featured here on A 50,000 original mile unrestored survivor,  the current caretaker has their Plus 4 offered for $45,000.   A review of the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms this private seller has his Morgan optimistically priced at $100 less than the current #1 “Concours” estimate of $45,100.

Morgan Motor Company has been producing its famed Plus 4  for seventy non-continuous years.  The first production ran from 1950 to 1969. It was revived in 1985 and filled the gap between the 4/4 and the Plus 8 until 2000. Then in 2005 Morgan management revived it for 2005. Most recently, the company introduced a redesigned PlusFour introduced earlier this year.

Body styles available were a 2-seat sports, a more luxurious 2 or 4 seat drophead coupé, and the 2+2 four-seater featured here.  While this vintage of Plus 4 relies on a Triumph running gear that’s still relatively easy to source, what’s even more nice to know is that Morgan will make you any other part you need for this car.  Yes, you may have to pay and wait, but they will do it for you.

We came across this older documentary about this historic Marque and about 14 minutes in a very young Charles Morgan, Grandson of the company founder, talks about the launch of the Plus 4 in 1951.

With only four pictures and a one-sentence description we don’t have much to go on however if you’ve always wanted a classic Morgan and don’t want to wait several years for Morgan to build you a brand new one, this may be a great alternative.  Good luck with the purchase!

Here’s the seller’s incredibly brief description:

“1961 Morgan plus 4
Unrestored original car. 4cylinder 4 speed manual trans. Great condition for a survivor.
