Last Lockers: 1997 Toyota FJZ80 Land Cruiser Collector’s Edition – Sold!
Toyota’s very capable and luxurious Land Cruiser celebrated its 40th anniversary in 1997, so to celebrate the company offered a limited production “Collector’s Edition” such as the Desert Dune example currently listed on Craigslist near Hudson, New York with 228,000 original miles. The third caretaker of the past nine years is currently asking $11,000, which a check of the NADA Guides Classic Car Online Valuation Tool confirms this private seller has his FJZ80 priced at the lower end of the “Low”, “Average”, and “High” retail value range of $7,350, $14,250, and $26,125, respectively.
Toyota produced the J80 version of its Land Cruiser over 18 years from 1990 to 2008. In 1997 a total of 4,744 FZJ80 Land Cruisers were sold in the United States as “40th Anniversary Limited Edition” models. The 40th Anniversary models included apron badges, a serial number badge on the center console, black pearl exterior badges, “40th Anniversary Limited Edition” embroidered floor mats, automatic climate control, two-tone tan and brown leather interiors, and wheels with the “D” windows painted dark gray. Many were manufactured with the optional electric front and rear locking differentials, keyless entry, port-installed roof racks, and running boards. This was the last year for the electric locking front differentials.
The seller provides an open and candid description of his Land Cruiser below. While the mileage exceeds 200K on this example when well maintained these vehicles have proven to run well into over 300,000 miles with just regular maintenance. Good luck with the purchase!
Here’s the seller’s description:
“1997 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER LIMITED EDTION IN DESERT DUNE
I am the 3rd owner of this very nice condition classic Landcruiser. I have had it for the last 9 years in which time I put about 80,000 miles on it. I mostly drove it longer distances a couple of 2x a week rather than a daily driver. I purchased it from the south and when I got it then it was completely rust free. Currently there are a couple of very small rust specks in paint in back that I can find. It runs great.
Vehicle has always been well taken care of. Regular oil changes etc. Tires and brakes good. Never been in any accidents.
