Wagon Wednesday isn’t just about long-roof models; classic two-wheel-drive Square Body Chevy Suburbans are welcome too. Our latest example is this 1986 Chevrolet Suburban reported to be in storage for the past sixteen years was first listed in July 2020 on Craigslist in McHenry, Illinois with 116,000 miles in great running condition with no rust and an asking price of $12,900. Checking the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms the seller has their Suburban priced between the #2 “Excellent” estimate of $13,600 and the #3 “Good” appraisal of $9,900.
Here’s the Hagerty Insurance take on these classic truck wagons:
“All of GM’s light-duty and medium-duty trucks for 1973 featured new cabs and pleasingly squared-off styling. Building on the success of Chevrolet’s king-sized truck-based wagon, the biggest news for the new Suburban was the addition of a driver’s side rear passenger’s door. A feature that we take for granted today, it also came a dozen years after the competing International Travelall and a decade after the Jeep Wagoneer first offered theirs.
While GM may have been late to that game, they stayed for the whole game to play, as IH withdrew from the light truck market in 1975. In those two years, the Suburban not only made greater inroads with market share, but they were also successfully pulling in new owners who would have otherwise have been car owners. While some of this is due to the four-door arrangement, it is also due to the increasing number of car-like options such as air conditioning, power seats, power windows, tilt steering column, and luxurious interior trim. For all years of this generation, the pickups and the Suburban all were available with the same trim packages – from bare-bones Custom Deluxe to the well-appointed Silverado.
1980 featured a one-year-only revised front styling, with a flatter front grille and square headlights. It proved to be a preview for 1981 and the rest of the production run, which had an all-new simplified front clip, new hood, and single plane grille.”
With the Twelfth generation just being launched as we write this, the Chevrolet Suburban is the longest continuously used automobile nameplate in automotive history. Its simple construction combined with many options for large families has traditionally made it one of General Motors’ most profitable vehicles. Known by enthusiasts as the “Square Body”, Chevrolet produced the seventh generation Rounded Line Suburban from 1973 through 1991. This was the first generation with two rear doors.
With the dual rear barn doors and a Class Three Trailer Hitch, this mid-level Scottsdale trim Suburban has the chops to make a compelling alternative to use as a daily driver versus dropping seventy large on a new example. The only odd thing we noticed about this example is the GMC steering wheel, so you’ll need to confirm with the seller the story behind that change. Otherwise, good luck with the purchase!

Hello my name is ryan Scicutella. Is this still available?
Hi Ryan, thank you for reaching out. No, unfortunately, that Suburban sold quickly on Craigslist but we were lax in updating the Classifind listing promptly. Apologies for the confusion.
