Cadillac’s fourth-generation Coupe de Ville produced from 1954 through 1956 provides a stately presence in stock form. However, with the right set of modern wheels and custom paint, these two-door hardtops take on a completely different persona, the latest example of which is this 29,000 original mile, factory air-conditioned, 1956 beauty listed recently on Craigslist in Pemberton, New Jersey for $24,000. Comparing the asking price with the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool for a stock example proves this private seller has his Coupe de Ville listed between the #3 “Good” appraisal of $27,500 and the #4 “Fair” (Daily Driver) estimate of $18,500.
Cadillac produced the fourth generation Series 62 line of coupes and sedans for the 1954 through 1956 model years. The Series 62 included a lower sleeker body, a new cellular grille insert, and inverted gull wing front bumpers and tapered “Dagmar” style bumper guards. Round jet style dual exhaust outlets were incorporated into the vertical bumper extensions and the rear bumper was entirely redesigned. An Eldorado style wraparound windshield was now used on all models. For coupes, Stylists referred to the smoothly curved wraparound backlight as the “Florentine” style rear window. A wide ventilator intake was now stretched across the base of the windshield on all body styles and the chrome visored headlamp look was a new styling trend. The Series 62 could be distinguished by the lack of rear fender louvers. Stylists liberally used V-shaped ornaments and crests on both the hood and trunk. Also present were full length body underscores in bright metal. Automatic windshield washers, power steering, 12-Volt electrical system, and aluminum alloy pistons made the long list of standard equipment for the first time in 1954.
Two years later for 1956, Cadillac stylists developed a new grille with a finer textured insert and repositioned the parking lights into the bumpers below the wing guards. Cadillac provided buyers with the option of either the standard satin finish grille or an optional gold finish. Designers also added a narrow chrome molding and nine vertical louvers. The Coupe de Ville had a model nameplate and a Cadillac crest on the sides of the front fenders.
We came across this 1956 Cadillac training video for dealers on how to sell the new models. Somewhat ironic is how this sales person couldn’t talk the buyer into springing for air conditioning but the original owner of the example featured here did.
With a presentable eight-year-old paint job, Chip Foose custom wheels, and working factory A/C, you can enjoy cruising now in air conditioned comfort while you slowly clean-up the interior bits as your time and budget allow. Good luck with the purchase!
Here’s the seller’s description:
“1956 Cadillac Coupe DeVille, 28,xxx original miles. Runs and drives great, factory heat and air conditioning car. Power windows, seat, soft close trunk, power steering and brakes. The body is extremely solid, straight and clean, the paint is a 7.5/10 in my opinion, a great 5 footer. It was painted in 2012~, I have a 4” thick binder with pictures and documentation when the car was stripped bare and repainted. The interior is a solid 8/10, the headliner and both kick panels could use a recover but are presentable as is. Both seats have been recovered, the carpet is newer, the leather dash was recently recovered. I do have (not installed) the full Autronic eye system that is included. All lights and signals work, horn, wipers etc as well. Foose Legend 18” wheels with new tires (2500 miles on the setup). I just took the car 130 miles round trip Saturday. It is a turn key, classy ass cruiser that you can clean up as you go. $24,000 or best offer, clean and clear title in hand, the car is still driven regularly so mileage will increase. No trades, located in NJ. 856-449-191two“
