July 24th Update: A tip from one of our anonymous readers (see in the comments below) confirmed the too-good-to-be-true 1964 Lotus Elan S2 we warned everyone about last week is really for sale for $22,900 in Alabama. We have flagged the Craigslist ad and if you want to help make that site a better place, follow the link as well to flag it. If you want to see the real ad, we’ve left the true link provided in the comments below.
A pretty yellow over black color scheme, and Alabama license plate but listed in Pennsylvania, and an unbelievably low asking price of $12,000 for an excellent condition 1964 Lotus Elan S2 recently on Craigslist in Scranton. These details combined with the too good to be true description having us believing that scam ads, even though they cost the poster five dollars and are much rarer, as a result, remain alive and well on Craigslist. Checking the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms this seller has their Lotus priced $4,500 below the current #4 “Fair” (Daily Driver) estimate of $16,500. Either the seller has his Elan priced to move quickly or more than likely this is a bogus ad. We’re never sure of the motivation of these types of ads, so if you decide to try to find out more, do yourself a favor and use an alias email to protect yourself.
Here’s the seller’s description that helped us believe this is a scam listing:
“This one, right out of the personal collection. This is an extremely rare, and extremely well sorted 1964 Lotus Elan S2 Convertible. This is not just your average Lotus Elan, this is an Elan with a racing history, single owner history, and documentation to back up the vehicle. In layman terms, if you are looking to buy a correct Lotus Elan, then you probably should NOT look any further. At this time, the frame was checked, and is in perfect condition, (a major weak point on these cars), as well as an all-new suspension setup was installed, along with new tires on the Panasport wheels. The result is a truly turn-key, Elan that is ready for weekend driving duties, or even some Historic Racing.“
