Owned 15 Years 1976 BMW 2002 5-Speed – SOLD!
August 16th Update – While updating our past Malaise Monday listings, we confirmed the private seller deleted their Craigslist post, so we’re calling this BMW “Sold!”
We love coming across “Classifinds” indicating long term ownership of a classic car. The last example is this 1976 Silver over Blue BMW 2002 the current caretaker for the past 15 years just listed for sale here on Craigslist in Palisades Park, New Jersey with an asking price of $11,900 or best offer. Using the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool as a guide, the private seller has their 2002 priced between the #2 “Excellent” level of $20,300 and the #3 “Good estimate of $11,600. If you are serious about buying this BMW, you can start the conversation by either texting or calling the seller at (201) 417-8357. When you do, please remember to mention you saw their 2002 featured here on GuysWithRides.com.
The 2002 was the updated 2.0L inline four version of BMW’s “02” sports sedan launched in 1966 with a 1.6 liter engine. With excellent handing and nearly perfect steering feel, this was the car that started the sports sedan craze popularized by the E21 “Three Series” BMW launched in 1975 to replace the 2002. Styling-wise, BMW launched the famous “Hoffmeister Kink” on the 1600/2002 – this is the forward curve placed towards the bottom of the rear window that remains a design element on BMWs and many other cars to this day.
The current caretaker of this 1976 BMW 2002 for the past fifteen years reports his car is properly serviced and up to date and features its original, matching numbers powertrain. While we note what appears to be minor rust in the passenger side lower rear quarter panel and the lower front edge of the driver’s door, as long as the undercarriage and other panels don’t hide any more trouble spots, what is there can be repaired prior to repaint. Another plus is the amount of spares, including period correct BBS style wheels that are part of the sale. Based on the owner’s account, this appears to be a solid and well-maintained example of BMW’s original sport sedan that will get you noticed wherever you drive it. Good luck with the purchase!
