Ruined Restoration: 1976 Ford Starsky & Hutch Edition Gran Torino – SOLD?
August 16th Update – Well, the listing for this overpriced Starsky & Hutch tribute expired. We’re willing to bet the car hasn’t sold based on the high asking price, so while we’re marking it “Sold?” for now we’ll continue to be on the lookup for an updated listing in the future.
July 26th Update: Just one week later and its becoming very apparent to the private seller of this Starsky & Hutch clone he overpriced his Ford. After lowering the price of his Gran Torino $7,000 to $28,000 just last week, the seller dropped the price another $3,000 to $25,000 over the weekend. Still way too optimistic in our humble opinion but we will keep an eye on this one to see if it goes any lower.
July 19th Update: Over the weekend we noticed the private seller may have received a dose of reality as he just lowered the price of his Gran Torino $7,000 to $28,000. Still way too optimistic in our humble opinion but we will keep an eye on this one to see if it goes any lower.
July 12th Update: In a shocking development, this “Starsky and Hutch” edition 1976 Ford Torino didn’t sell at $39,000 when we first featured it in March. We doubt the asking price of $35,000 will get anyone to bite either.
Question: how do you ruin a piece of history when “restoring” a rare car? Answer: you make too many modifications instead of restoring it to like new condition. Unfortunately, that’s our first impression of this claimed limited edition 1976 Ford Gran Torino “Starsky & Hutch” edition recently listed on Craigslist in Clifton, New Jersey with a revised asking price of $28,000, which is down a staggering $11,000 from last fall’s original ask of $39,000. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find a pricing benchmark for this example.
Perhaps its just us (and we’d love to read your comments on the subject below), but if you have a relatively rare piece of history, restore it to original. If this was a restomod tribute build based on a regular Gran Torino, we’d be all over it. Instead, we’re left to read between what’s been butchered and what’s been restored and the included Starsky cardigan sweater, signed poster, and die cast model don’t make up for it. Again, that’s just our opinion. We’re sure there’s a legion of Ford enthusiasts who always wanted a Starsky & Hutch car yet wanted it with the “go” to back up the “show”. If you fall into that camp, this may be the car for you. Good luck with the purchase!
Here’s the seller’s lengthy description:
“How popular was the Starsky and Hutch Zebra 3 Gran Torino? Though it trails behind the General Lee and the Smokey and Bandit Trans Am, enough folks coveted the car to warrant Ford’s creation of the Starsky and Hitch Special Gran Torino in 1976. A Virtual look alike of the TV car, Ford’s Chicago Plant built 1001 units with the distinctive Zebra 3 tow -tone color treatment. When you look at the VIN the second digit G signifies that it was built by Ford. Further more when looking at Vehicle Certification label where the DSO code must read 0022. The Zebra 3 Gran Torino from Starsky and Hutch actually appeared in the 1st episode of the Dukes of Hazzard (titled “One Armed Banditâ€) Cooter Davenport (Played by actor Ben Jones) is seen behind the wheel. The Starsky /Hutch car used in the that episode was certainly one of the 1001 replicas built by Ford in 1976, and not a loan out car. The Ford Chicago plant workers had to paint each of the 1001 cars not once, but two times. (Source Steve Magnante’s 1001 Muscle car facts)
