July 28th Update – We came across a fresh listing for this brown 1980 Ford Pinto wagon we first featured in April. Despite no sale thus far, the private seller has not budged on their $12,000 asking price.
The final year of production of Ford’s Pinto was 1980 and arguably one of the lowest mileage survivors from that model year may be this 40K original mile Pony Sport Wagon five-speed currently listed here on Craigslist in Chester, Virginia with an asking price of $12,000. While Hagerty Insurance currently does not list a value for these cars, the NADA Guides Classic Car Online Valuation Tool lists their “Low”, “Average”, and “High” retail value range at only $1,000, $1,975, $2,850, respectively and we note this wood-paneled ’80 Pinto sold at no reserve on Bring A Trailer for only $3,800 this past December. While we note we personally observed this similar low-mileage Pinto cross the auction block for $10,000 last August at Mecum Harrisburg, we believe the seller is way too optimistic on his price and thus we are awarding him our latest “NEW!” (short for “No Effin Way!”) Award their asking price is at best very optimistic. Ford manufactured and marketed the Ford Pinto the 1971 through 1980 model years. The smallest American Ford vehicle since 1907, the Pinto was the first subcompact vehicle produced by Ford in North America. In February 1972, the Pinto station wagon debuted with an overall length of 172.7 inches and up to 60.5 cubic feet of cargo volume. The first 2-door Ford station wagon since the 1965 Falcon, the Pinto wagon came equipped with flip-open rear quarter windows. Along with front disc brakes, the 2.0 Liter engine was standard equipment. A Pinto Squire wagon featured faux wood side paneling similar to the full-size Country Squire.
For the 1979 model year, the Pinto saw its last significant styling update. Shedding its original Maverick-like styling, the Pinto took on the look of the modern Fairmont with rectangular headlamps, inboard vertical parking lamps and a taller slanted back grille. Except for the wagon’s tail lights, however, remained unchanged. The interior was updated with a new rectangular instrument cluster and modified dash-pad for vehicles without the optional sports instrumentation. The variety of sports appearance packages was revised, some with new graphics. 1980 marked the end of the Pinto’s production run. For 1980, the V6 engine was discontinued, leaving the 2.3L as the sole engine.
While this Pinto likely offers a new-old-car experience and the five-speed manual transmission, makes driving it a bit sportier, only a die-hard Ford or Pinto lover will likely want to add this Malaise Era example to their collection. Good luck with the purchase!
