Well Kept 951: 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo – SOLD!

August 13th Update:  We confirmed the private seller of this Guards Red Porsche deleted their Craigslist posting we first featured at the end of July, so we’re calling this one “Sold!”

When you take a look at the air-cooled Porsche market, it can feel a bit deflating if you’ve had your heart set on a vintage 911. Fortunately, a solid Plan B exists in cars like this 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo listed in Providence, Rhode Island with 127,980 original miles. These front-engined, water-cooled sports car are still attainable for most project car budgets, with the price obviously ticking upwards for pristine examples with years’ worth of service records. Checking the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool reveals that a 944 Turbo in “Good” condition retails for $15,500, so the seller’s ask of $14,900 for what looks like a decent Sunday driver seems to be on the money. That said, a Concours example will set you back $51,500, so the sky is seemingly the limit for these four-cylinder Porsches at the moment – should you grab one while you can?

When we look at the Radwood movement, there are some models that keep popping up on various social media channels and at car shows, both virtual and in-person. The 944 is seemingly overtaking the 911 as the poster child for iconic Porsches from the 80s. Blame the pop-up headlights or phone dial alloy wheels, or simply the use of a turbocharger to extract some extra juice from the standard 944’s engine. The four-cylinder mills found in the 924 and naturally-aspirated 944s never did much to get enthusiasts’ blood pumping, but the turbocharged 951 cars delivered a healthy dose of thrust, clocking in at 217 horsepower, good enough for a 0 to 60 run in just under six seconds. That’s respectable speed today, but certainly worth noting in 1988. Of course, it could just be that anyone below a certain age has been priced out of 911 ownership, so cars like the 944 Turbo and 928 are the next best things if you want a rad-era Porsche with some serious scoot.

This example presents quite well despite having well into the six digits on the odometer, with cosmetics that suggest this 944 has seen far less use than the odometer suggests. The interior looks quite clean with leather-wrapped surfaces displaying little in the way of wear-and-tear, and high-use areas like the seats and the dash suggesting this turbocharged 944 was kept indoors and detailed often. The seller doesn’t go into details on any recent maintenance, but the listing suggests that a phone call would clear that up, as the seller claims to have records going back to the 1990s. It’s also said to still deliver the thrills the manufacturer intended, as the seller notes it pulls hard to this day.  Good luck with the purchase!
