Tad Noisy: 1976 Pinzgauer 710M 4×4 – Sold?

Year-to-date, world events have most of us wanting to get away from it all. One of the best ways to really get away from it all is to drive a Pinzgauer 710M such as this 1976 example currently listed in August 2020 on Craigslist in Corning, New York with an asking price of $12,000. A number of comparable sales on BringATrailer.com confirm the seller’s asking price is very low compared to the successful auctions on that site.

The Steyr-Daimler-Puch company located in Graz, Austria originally developed the Pinzgauer line (named after an Austrian breed of horse) in the late 1960s and manufactured and manufactured the vehicles through 2000. Military units across the world consider Pinzgauers among the most capable all-terrain vehicles ever made. While not as fast as a Humvee on dry roads, Pinzgauers carry more troops and move faster over rough trails.

A Pinzgauer will likely get you to your destination regardless of the terrain. However, it will not do it very fast as its top speed is only 68 miles per hour. While very slow, 710Ms like the example presented here can carry nine of your closest friends or troops and can tow 11,000 pounds on pavement or 3,307 off-road. With its air-cooled gas engine and sealed central differentials, Pinzauers have proven themselves to be very reliable and easy to work on.  The Pinzgauer’s combination of a central tube chassis design with a transaxle distributes the vehicle’s weigh evenly at a relatively low center of gravity contributes to its high mobility. Like Mercedes’ Unimog, Pinzgauers utilize portal axles to provide extra clearance over obstacles.

We enjoyed reading the private seller mentioning his Pinzgauer is “a tad loud.”  He also discloses there is “some rust” and “considerable wear and tear.”  Consequently, the price reflects the condition so you’ll need to go through this off road vehicle thoroughly during your in-person inspection to confirm whether you have the skills and tools required to keep it usuable.  Good luck with the purchase!

For local pick-up; will also work with transport company contracted by buyer.
Good condition. Runs fine (even if it’s a tad noisy). Some rust. Overall in good shape given its age, but there is considerable wear and tear testifying to the great adventures it has experienced on 2 continents over the decades.
Back portion (troop- and cargo-carrier area) is soft top; truck cab is hard top.
Built by the Austrian manufacturer Steyer-Daimler-Puch, the Pinzgauer 710M soft-top 4×4 military troop carrier is considered by many SUV enthusiasts to be the ultimate off-road vehicle. They’re also renowned for their surprisingly easy maneuverability. Historically, chief customers for this and similar Steyer-Puch product were the Austrian, British, and Swiss militaries. This particular vehicle was originally built for the Swiss Army and it retains some of the original plaques and stickers in 2 or 3 of Switzerland’s 4 national languages: German, French, and Italian.
